Llanwit Major Charity Open 19th April 2026

The East Region section of Angling Cymru Sea Anglers fished their annual open event at Cardiff Foreshore & Penarth where an attendance of 60 anglers turn out in ideal weather conditions. The fishing turned out to be patchy with fish being hard to find for some anglers. 31 anglers caught fish totalling 48.585kgs. Consisting of 9 different species, including thornback & spotted rays, bass, conger & silver eels, dog fish, bull huss, whiting & pouting.


The top 6 places are as follows who get Angling Trust Sea League points who are sponsored by Anyfish Anywhere & ASSO Sport Fishing.

In 1st place was SWSA club member Chris Mather from Cardiff with 6.8kgs consisting of 2 conger eels. One of which was 4.55kgs which was also the heaviest fish of the match. Chris picked up the first prize of £300 donated by Angling Cymru Sea Anglers East Region (ACSAER) & the heaviest bag pool of £55.

In third place was Caerau SAC club member Shaun Moore from Cardiff with 3.55kgs consisting of a conger eel & a dog fish. Shaun won a Six & Bait Anyfish Anywhere beachcaster donated by Julian Shambrook.

 


Fourth place went to Cardiff SAC club member Roy Tapper from Marshfield Gwent with 3.18kgs consisting of 2 bass & a silver eel which was returned safely to the water. Roy won £100 donated by Newport & District SAC. (Tony Hart).

 

5th Place went to Holton Road Angling Centre owner Dan Crump with 2.96kgs.kgs consisting of a conger eel, 2 dog fish & a pouting. Dan won a Tronixpro Exodus Match rod donated by Steve Tuckers Agencies.

 

6th Place was Angling Ambitions rod builder Dai Llewellyn from Barry with 2.64kgs consisting of a thornback ray & a dog fish. Dai won £50 donated by Wrigglers Baits 

Junior winner was Henry Equall who won a £50 Tackle Voucher with a whiting & conger eel for 0.47kgs.

Runner up was Lawson Gamlin with a silver eel of 0.24kgs. He won a £30 Tackle Voucher.

All junior prizes where donated by Craig Maddock, Chair Person of ACSA East Region.

Llanwit Major Charity Open 19th April 2026

The Llantwit Major Charity Open took place over a 3-mile stretch of local beaches this weekend. Flat conditions prevailed on the ebb with a slight increase of a westerly wind on the flood. 10 different species of fish were caught consisting of smooth hound, conger eel, 3 bearded rockling, spotted / small-eyed / thornback rays, dog fish, bull huss, pouting, & bass. In all 49 anglers out of 66 caught fish totalling 237 kgs. 

 

This Years event was run to raise money for animal charity ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL The event was hosted by Tata SAC. 

 

The event raised £1283 which will go towards the welfare & up-keep of the animals within the charity.

2nd Ken Shove  from Newport with 14.73 kgs, Ken  won £150 donated by Donna Stonelake Estate Agents Cwmbran.

 

3rd  Dai Llewellyn from Barry with 12.73 kgs, Dai won £100 donated by Angling Ambitions (Himself). 

 

4th  John Griffiths from Tonyrefailf with 9.5 kgs John won £100 donated by Llantwit Major Beach Cafe (Maria Hughes).

 

5th Lee Williams from Cardiff with 9.089 kgs, Lee won £100 donated by Richard Potts Treforest Tiling LTD.

Heaviest Fish Pools.

 

Heaviest conger eel pool was won by Ken Shove with a great conger eel of 6.665 kgs. He won £50 donated by Mark Cruickshank. Heaviest dog fish pool went to Rhys Lewis with a fish of 1.05kgs. He won £50 donated by Gary Parson.  The Heaviest bass pool went to John Griffiths with a fish of 2.38 kgs. He won £50 donated by Sea View Lads. Heaviest rockling pool went to Peter Hammond with a fish of 0.565 kgs. He won £50 donated by Lee Jones SWSA.

 

The 5th & 15th place heaviest bag pools went to Lee Williams & & Rhys Lewis, £53 each.

 

Pairs result.

 

Shaun Moore & Dai Llewellyn won the pairs with a combined weight of 43.907 kgs, they won £56. Runners up in the pairs with combined weight of 13.606 kgs was Joe Arch & Ben Price, they won £38.

 

An impressive raffle took place during the event with 70 prizes on offer which raised over £500 towards the charity funds. Main Organiser Mark Cowell wishes to thank MR TESS for all the free polo tops & caps, plus all the other sponsors & helpers for what has again been an extremely successful event.
