Gwent & District Open Report 4th May 2025 at Cardiff Foreshore

Gwent & District SAC held their annual open event at Cardiff Foreshore in memory of Neil Evans & Mark Newman on 4th May when 71 anglers fished in bright sunlight and a breezy north easterly which persisted throughout the match. Fishing was hard with only 18 anglers bring fish to the scales.  Six species in all were caught including conger eels, bass, dog fish, pouting, thornback rays & silver eels.

 

In first place with a single conger eel of 2.23 kgs was Holton Road SAC member Roy Harding from Barry. Roy won £300 donated by Family Finance LTD. Roy’s conger was also the biggest fish of the day.

Runner up was Mark Cowell (below left) from Llantwit Major for the second year running with a single conger eel of 2.16 kgs. Mark won £200 donated by Gwent & District SAC in memory of Neil Evans.

 

Third place went to Dai Llewellyn (below right) with a single thornback ray 2.03 kgs. Dai won £100 donated by Gwent & District SAC in memory of Mark Newman.

Fourth place went to SWSA angling member Dio Smith with a single conger eel of 1.7 kgs.

 

Fifth place went to Cardiff SAC angler Joseph Gamlin with a bass of 1.42 1kgs. Joseph also won the 5th place pool of £62.

 

Sixth place went to Tenby angler Dorian Harris with 2 dog fish for 1.36 kgs.

 

Seventh place went to Cearau SAC member Shaun Moore with 2 dog fish for 1.19 kgs.

 

15th Place Pool money of £62 was won by Stephen Ellis with a dog fish of 0.345 kgs.

Junior winner was Lawson Gamlin with 4 silver eels, a dog fish and a pouting for 1.36 kgs. Lawson won a Penn Rival fixed spool reel and finished a very impressive 9th overall.

 

Second Place Junior was Benjamin Winton with 5 silver eels for 1.14 kgs. Benjamin won a Beach Caster rod and also finished 11th overall.

 

All junior prizes were donated by Gwent & District SAC.

Llantwit Major Charity Open 22nd April 2025

The Llantwit Major Charity Open took place over a 3 mile stretch of local beaches on 22nd April. Flat conditions prevailed on the ebb with a slight increase of a southerly wind on the flood. 10 different species of fish were caught consisting of smooth hound, conger eel, 3 bearded rockling, spotted / small eyed ray dog fish bull huss pouting bass & codling. In all 71anglers caught fish totalling an impressive 437 kgs of fish.

This year’s event was run to raise money for the local Cefn Cribwr/Pyle/Kenfig Hill Village Warrior Girls Rugby Team Hosted by Tata SAC and raised £1787.

The top 3 was a very tight affair with the spoils going to visiting anglers from England & North Wales.

1st Saul Page from Dover with 31.685 kgs consisting of 12 dog fish 7 smooth hounds & 2 rockling. Sage won £300 cash donated by Velta Construction Treforest. (Gavin Tucker).

2nd Ben Price from Holyhead with 30.12 kgs consisting of 16 dog fish 4 small eyed rays & 4 smooth hounds. Ben won £150 donated by SEG Charted Surveyors. (Andrew Hutchings).

3rd Nathan Elliot from Deal with 29.925 kgs. consisting of 25 dog fish 5 smooth hounds 7 bull huss a pouting & a conger eel. Nathan won £100 donated by Marioa from the Llantwit beach cafe.

4th Roy Tapper from Marshfield Gwent with 16.205 kgs consisting of 19 dog fish 4 bull huss a pouting a bass & 2 conger eels. Roy won £100 donated by Shaun & Steve Tucker from Neath.

5th Dai Llewellyn from Barry with 15.327 kgs consisting of 11 dog fish 4 smooth hounds 2 conger eels a pouting & a bass. Dai won £100 donated by the Newport Mid-Week Charity league. (Tony Hart).

6th Chris Stephens for Bridgend with 14.36 kgs consisting of 7 dog fish 4 bull huss 2 smooth hounds & a pouting. Chris won £100 donated by Think Urban Designs. (Leith Fetaidas).

7th Shaun Moore from Cardiff with 13.765 kgs consisting of 9 dog fish 2 pouting 2 smooth hounds & a conger eel. Shaun won £50 donated by Richard Smith of Dragon Baits.

8th Chris Jenkins from Bridgend with 13.765 kgs consisting of 7 dog fish 4 bull huss 2 smooth hounds & a conger eel. Chris won £50 donated by Justin Bird.

9th Damain White with 13.335 kgs. He won £50 donated by Mark Chruickshank Tata SAC.

10th was Tyler Brimfield with 13.19 kgs. He won £50 donated by Richard Potts Treforest Tiling LTD.

11th Peter Hammond with 12.60 kgs. He won £50 donated by Andrew Griffiths (Caerphilly).

12th Steve Tucker with 12.29 kgs. He won £25 donated by John Griffiths Tata SAC.

13th Leigh Davies with 12.17 kgs. He won £25 donated by Lee Jones SWSA SAC.

14th Chris Mather with 10.42 kgs. He won £25 donated by Gareth Swensonn SWSA SAC.

15th Like Groom with 10.42 kgs. He won £25 donated by Gerald John Holton Road SAC.

 

The remaining Seamaster points winners were Lewis Holbrow, Lee Brimfield, Lee Williams, John Autoin & Jamie Mills.

Junior Winner

 

Ashton Norris (below) fishing for Holton Road Angling was the only junior to catch fish during the match weighing in 2.25 kgs consisting of 3 dog fish & a bull Huss. 

Heaviest Fish Pools.

 

Heaviest conger eel pool was won by Tyler Brimfield 5.29kgs. He won £50 donated by Richard Potts Treforest Tiling LTD.

 

Heaviest dog fish pool went Phil George with a fish of 1.12 kgs. He won £50 donated by Gary Parsons.

 

Heaviest ray went to Damian Whire with a small eyed of 3.55 kgs. He won £50 donated by Sammy & Mark Nichols. 

 

The Heaviest bass pool went To Dai Llewellyn with a fish of 1.60 kgs.

 

Heaviest Pouting went to Gareth Bryne with a of 0.44 kgs doated by  Andrew Griffiths. (Cearphilly).

 

Heaviest rocking pool went to Chris Mather with a fish of 0.58 kgs. He won £50 donated by Dave Cave Anglesey Match Anglers.

The 5th & 15th place heaviest bag pools went to Holton Road SAC members Dai Llewellyn. & Luke Groom who both won £54.

Dover & Deal combo Saul Page & Nathan Elliot won the pairs with a combined weight of 67.165 kgs, they won £32. Runners up in the pairs with combined weight of 46.325 kgs. was Roy Tapper & Ben Price, they both won £26.

​

An impressive raffle took place during the event with 40 prizes on offer which raised over £500 towards the charity funds. Main Organiser Mark Cowell wishes to thank all sponsors, anglers & helpers for what has been an extremely successful event & hopes to do it all again next year.
