16th RNLI Annual Fishing Open
The 16th RNLI Annual Fishing Open, organised by members from Pembroke & District Angling Club and Osprey Sea Angling Club, was held on Sunday 1st February 2026 on Amroth beach in South Pembrokeshire.
The weather was very good indeed for the time of year with attendance at 53, only slightly down on previous years, which included 2 Ladies and 2 juniors, 1 boy and 1 girl. However, in the very flat sea conditions with rollers surging up the beach, very few fish were caught but not lots, and only 1 Flounder and 1 Dab weighed in by 2 anglers.

The winning angler, with a nice Flounder of 650gms, was Alison George from Milford Haven, who is a constant supporter of the charity opens, netting her the first prize of £200.
Second, with a dab of 175gms, which allowed him to pick up the runner’s up prize of £100, was Ben Cook, from Pembroke, another regular at these competitions and that was that.
However, there was a Pairs Competition with prizes and as that is basically a side pool then they have to be awarded somehow, so they were drawn. First pair out of the hat were Beverly Brown and Stan Kucyj followed by Ed Pritchard and Andrew Jamieson in second.

However, the most important result on the day was that the event raised £916.40 for the lifeboats. In gratitude for this sterling effort we must thank our sponsors. in no particular order, they were, Oriel Johnson, Darren Jones, Mike Rowe of J & M Tackle, Dimond St, Pembroke Dock, Shane Tucker, Andrew Skeels, John O’Connor, Alison George, Leigh Rogers, Chris Wynn, Millforge, Big Brums, Davies Decorators, Tesco, Pembroke Dock, Peter Kraus, Apollo Trampolines, Londis, Pembroke Dock, Mike Watkins, EFSA Wales, Ed Pritchard, Andrew Jamieson, Kirsty Culley together with Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn who put his premises and valued support at this event’s disposal and donated the prize for the Stewards raffle which was won by John O’Connor. Also helping with selling and folding the raffle tickets, very efficiently, I must say, were Jennie McIntosh (President) and several of her fellow members of RNLI Saundersfoot branch. Finally, If anybody feels aggrieved that they have been missed off this list and we hope there isn’t, we are truly sorry, but thank you, most warmly, for your continued support.

Wales Air Ambulance Open Beach Fishing Competition
4th January 2026, Amroth Beach
The 22nd Wales Air Ambulance Open Beach Fishing Competition, organised by members from Pembroke & District Angling Club and Osprey Sea Angling Club was held on Sunday 4th January 2026 on Amroth beach in South Pembrokeshire. The weather on the day was better than that which had been experienced locally in the run up to the competition, snow and ice. It was very cold but mainly dry with only a slight southerly wind but thankfully no snow and not too much ice locally. So, once again, the weather Gods smiled on us, which meant the conditions were very fishable with only a light surf running. The turnout and support was short of the previous year and similar to the charity event in November in aid of the Blood bikes Wales, with 39 anglers including 3 Ladies and 2 Juniors entering, probably due to the appalling weather continuing to the east, videos of blizzards east of Carmarthen were shared round. We thank them all very much indeed for their support. The fishing was quite good, for flatties and the doggie bashers, 13 anglers brought 12 Flounder to the scales along with 6 doggies and a Dab. There were other fish caught but they were either, undersize and returned, or considered too light to threaten the weighers.

The winning angler who managed to land 3 Flounder, for a winning bag of 1Kg 780gms was Adam Roberts, netting him the first prize of £200. Second was local Osprey club member, regular and one of the organisers, Haydn Cole with a cracking Flounder of 1Kg 70gms, over 2 pounds (907gms) in old money, netting him the £100 second prize for the heaviest single fish. Third prize went to Martin Wilson with 2 Flounder for 1Kg 115gms. In the pair’s competition, in which both anglers had to weigh in, first were Haydn and his partner, Paul Curtice, with 3 Flounder and 2 dogs for a bag of 2Kg 755gms. Second were local anglers, Rob Collins and Ben Cook who had 2 Dogs and a Dab for their bag of 2Kg 5gms. The Ladies prize was won by that great collector of prizes for the grand raffle, Kirsty Culley who also won the Stewards draw, with a Flounder of 590gms. The 2 juniors also caught, Rhys White won with a Flounder of 470gms and Wynter Protheroe was second with a Flounder of 230gms.

However, the most important result on the day was that the event raised £642 (great considering the low numbers) for the Wales Air Ambulance pushing the total raised over the 22 years this competition has been running, well in excess of £26,000. To thank for this sterling effort we must first congratulate the anglers from the organising clubs, you know who you are, together with Mr Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn who put his premises and valued support at this event’s disposal as well as providing the prize for the Stewards draw. Lastly, we must thank the many sponsors of the event; in no particular order:- Milforge, Osprey SAC, Darren Jones, Shane Tucker, EFSA Wales, John O’Connor, J & M Tackle and Bait, Pembroke Dock, Broadside Charters of Dale, Peter Kraus, Kirsty Culley, Alison George, Andrew Jamieson, Simply Landscaping, Mobility Wales, Oriel Johnson, Phil Dury, Yolanda Williams, Katie Finnegan, Will Hodgens, Daniel Tucker, Mike Williams, Chris Wynn and the Dial Inn in Lamphey. If anybody feels aggrieved that they have been missed off this exhaustive list and we hope there isn’t, we are truly sorry, but thank you, most warmly, for your continued support.
One final thing is that the whole shebang repeats itself in 3 weeks on Sunday the 1st February with the 16th RNLI Annual Fishing Open, for which we now pray for good weather and at least as good a turnout and catch.
