The Welsh men’s carp team will be mixing it with the best in the world this week when the World Carp Fishing Championships (Men’s) get underway in Croatia.
Captain Nathan Garrett leads a six-strong Team Wales line-up and is paired with Nathan McKenzie. The other Welsh pairings are Lee Jackson and Richard Jones while Eric Royston lines up with Declan Johnson.
The team are once again managed by Tim Jones.
There is a 33 country line-up, with hosts Croatia the defending champions, for what is the 25th staging of these championships. It is taking place from 17-20 September over Josova and Borovik Lakes in the city of Dakovo – organised by the Croatian Sport Fishing Federation.
Speaking ahead of what will, for all six members of the team, be their first experience at a world championship, or of fishing in Croatia, skipper Nathan Garrett said: “For me to be leading the boys as captain this year is honestly a privilege.
“Preparation has been intense, but the team is feeling good and focused.
“We're expecting varied weather in Croatia and so adapting and using our angling knowledge is going to be key.
“It's our first worlds as a team – and none of us have fished in a world championships as an individual – so there’s a lot of excitement and nerves, which are good to have.
“None of the team has fished in Croatia before, but I’m sure our training and preps have given us the tools we need and I’m feeling confident in the boys
“We're expecting some strong competition from several teams, but we're ready for the challenge. Success for us would be performing at our best and representing our country well.
“Every man on the team are individually very capable and competitive, which means each pair are strong.
“I know if they go out and fish hard, they are capable of anything."
Tight lines, lads!
