Dedicated Pembrokeshire coaching volunteers introduce 224 youngsters to angling in 2025

The tireless dedication of a group of Pembrokeshire based volunteers has helped introduce 224 youngsters to angling in 2025.

The Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches (PFAC) is a group of 17 volunteer coaches who, this year alone, have helped facilitate 30 coaching sessions for young people. Participants have ranged from young carers, scout organisations, pupils with special education needs, and even a group of Brazilian exchange students!

Founded in 2007, PFAC organises coaching events for local schools and youth groups, teaching basic casting and fishing techniques. A variety of events covering coarse, sea and fly fishing are offered – with fly fishing being the most popular and most requested among participants!

Coach coordinator Paul Matthews said: “We find it incredibly satisfying to be part of one big jigsaw puzzle where everyone in PFAC plays their part. Take out one piece and you don’t get the complete picture.

“The coaches all look forward to spending time with young enthusiastic people – and giving them their first introduction to angling and some of the mysteries of the countryside.

“It is always hugely satisfying to see pupils catch and land their first fish and then to receive great feedback about it later.

“We all want to pass on some of our knowledge and experience so that pupils all get the very best positive experience that perhaps leads them to take up the sport for life.”

PFAC can be found on Facebook.
