Nica Prichard MBE celebrated on her retirement from coaching

Nica Prichard MBE

A well-known Pembrokeshire resident and angler received a surprise visit from some of her colleagues last week – to celebrate her retirement from coaching.

Nica is a life-long angler, who has represented her country on several occasions as a member of Welsh Ladies Angling Division. In Newport circles, she is closely involved with the Nevern Angling Club and Newport Boat Club.

In 2009, Nica was awarded the MBE for her services to Angling and the environment.

It was around this time she became one of the founder members of the Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches (PFAC) – bringing together like-minded individuals who wanted to give something back to the sport.

Since then, Nica and her fellow coaches have, in Pembrokeshire, introduced many hundreds of people of all ages and abilities to angling.

Now well into her 80s and following her decision to ease back on her coaching commitment, her fellow coaches felt that this should not be allowed to pass without recognising the huge contribution that Nica has made to PFAC.

Accordingly, a group of her fellow coaches were welcomed by Nica at her Newport home where, helped by her close friend Becky, refreshments were served and many a story told.

In particular, the story of Nica being recalled to the Welsh Ladies fly fishing team at the age of 80. The team went on to win gold and she and her team mates celebrated by jumping into Llyn Clywedog!

During her lifetime, Nica will have gazed on many a leaping salmon and it was felt fitting that she should be presented with a climbing, fragrant rose aptly names “Leaping Salmon”!

Thank you, Nica, for all you have done for the angling community, and beyond.

Angling Cymru’s Helen Pearce also passed tribute to Nica.

“Angling Cymru would like to thank Nica Prichard MBE for her significant contribution to angling in Wales over many years,” said Helen.

“Her dedication to coaching and promoting angling has helped thousands of people to take up the sport.

“Nica has always been very passionate about the development of women and girls in angling and she has inspired so many over the years to enjoy angling and compete at the highest level.

"Diolch Nica!”
