Team Wales Float squad for European Championships named

Wales Float team manager Ben Roberts has named his squad for the forthcoming European Championships in the Netherlands.

Lee Edwards, Ty Woods, Chris Jones, Geraint Powell, Steve Roberts along with Ben will fly the flag for Team Wales at this year’s championships, being held along the Princess Margaret Canal in Spannenburg over the weekend of 29 & 30 June.

The Welsh team has mixture of new faces and experienced anglers.

Lee needs little introduction and will bring vital knowledge, know-how and experience to the team.

Joining him are Chris, who has made two previous full international appearances, in 2022, along with Geraint.

Ty makes his full international debut after impressing in the recent Celtic Cup and some good results over the last few years, while Steve also makes his debut.

Steve had a long break from fishing after winning a world bronze team medal as a junior back in 1994. He came back into fishing around two to three years ago and has demonstrated in the Celtic Cup that he still has lots of natural talent.

Five out of the six will fish while Ben will manage and fish with the help of his assistant Si Greening and bank team James Thomas, Euan Luke and Bez Luke.

The team will travel on 21 June to spend a full seven days practising prior to the event.

“The venue looks really good with plenty of bream and skimmers to be caught,” said Ben.

“It’s varied flow with lots of boat traffic so likely to be mainly pole fishing with flat floats up to 6g. We are really looking forward to the event.

“Chris and Geraint are fishing a practice Sensas event on the venue in early June alongside two England team members; this should be a great recce and I plan to try and fly out to watch the match.”

It’s set to be a big year for the Team Wales Float Fishing Team with the World Championships taking place in Bethune, northern France, in September.

Ben added: “2024 was always earmarked when taking the job as it’s extremely rare for both the Euros and World events being so close to home in Holland and Northern France.

“Both venues should suit the team with familiar target species – Roach, Bream and Skimmers.”

The squad for the Worlds will be announced in due course.
