Top 10 finish for Team Wales at 71st Coarse Angling World Championships

Updated: Sep 14

The Team Wales Float Fishing Team secured a hugely creditable top 10 finish at this year’s Coarse Angling World Championships held in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Welsh team, led by Ben Roberts and also featuring Lee Edwards, Zac Brown, Andy Neal and Ty Woods, placed ninth overall from the 30 competing nations after two days of intense competition on Lake Modrac, located in the municipality of Lukavac.

An excellent second day also saw Wales rise from 16th position at the end of the first day.

Italy were crowned team champions in what was the 71st staging of these championships, ahead of Croatia in second and France third.

Among the highlights for Wales were Ben Roberts winning his section on day one and then Ty Woods, having finished last in his section on day one, storming back to win his section on day two.

Reflecting on this year’s championships, Ben said: “One of my biggest takeaways from the week is the character shown by the team.

“A special mention to Ty Woods – after a tough day one and a slow start day two, many would have lost their head especially in their first world championships. But he turned it around brilliantly with a section win.

“To go from 16th team result day one is a great turnaround.

“Ninth place is another step forward. Last year in France we were just a point off 10th, and every year we’re improving.

"Keep this team together and I honestly believe Wales can push on to bigger things in future championships.”
