Wales bag silver medals as Gweryd Lakes hosts 2025 Ladies Carp Tri-Nations Championships

The beautiful Gweryd Lakes fishery in north east Wales was the host venue for the 2025 Ladies Carp Tri-Nations Championships which took place this past bank holiday weekend (23-25 May).

Ladies teams from defending champions England, Scotland and the hosts Wales were all in attendance to contest the trophy.

After 48 hours of intense carp fishing, the final result saw England (3pts) victorious across all three sections and retaining the trophy ahead of runners-up Wales (9pts) and Scotland (10pts). Full final results are posted at the end of this page.

Five of the six members of the Welsh team were carp fishing at this level for the very first time, with the exception of Laura Garrett – who went to the World Championships in Latvia in 2024.

The six were paired up in their sections as follows: Celine Howells and Joanne Hadley (A2), Laura Garrett and Bethany Roberts (B2) and Kim Pugh and Leanne Watson (C1). Captain Jackie Potts, also currently standing in as team assistant manager, was reserve.  Tim Jones was once again team manager.

The 48 hours certainly saw all that British springtime could offer; starting the teams off into a false sense of security at 20 degrees and then, within a few hours, horrendous winds and showers.

The lake is a beautiful venue but, walking around to see the teams within the sections, you got an understanding of the different challenges the ladies faced. On one side of the lake, you could sit in t-shirt and shorts feeling a warm wind. Yet, around the other side of the lake, the ladies were in full winter gear, with strong gales heading right at them.

The first 24 hours were when most fish were caught, with England moving into the lead by a very small margin – and this is where the scores mainly stayed.

Up until the last hour, each section only had a weight of a 16lb fish that would have put them into the lead. Wales fought hard to gain this but, despite their best efforts, were unable to prevent England taking the trophy home.

Captain Jackie added: “The Welsh ladies proudly received silver medals for their hard work, and came away having learned a lot from the experience – as five of them had never competed for their nation as a carp angler before.

“Well done to all of the ladies that fished this weekend. Credit to all of you.

“The aim now is to get ready for the World Championships in Italy. This competition has given them a thirst for bringing some medals home. The team are already arranging training dates and planning their strategies to hit the Italian lake full on.”

Angling Cymru would also like to thank Tim and Johanna at Gweryd Lakes for allowing us to use their lovely venue for these championships. Find out more about Gweryd Lakes, Llanarmon yn Ial,  by visiting their website.
